Four weeks before the move...
Day 1
- Develop a moving inventory, decide which items you'll pack, and which you'd like your moving company to pack.
- Tour your home and decide which items should be discarded or donated to charity.
- Consider a moving sale.
- By looking at your moving inventory, determine the packing materials required.
Day 2
- Arrange transfer of school records.
- Transfer personal insurance records.
- Call doctors and dentists. They may recommend a colleague near your new home. Get copies of renewable prescriptions and request medical and dental records.
Day 3
- If moving from a lease, notify landlord and request deposit back.
- Check homeowners insurance policies to see if moving is covered. Be sure your new home is protected by transferring fire, theft and other personal property insurance.
Day 4
- If you have house plants to move, start preparing your plants for the move. Any plants in clay pots should be repotted in unbreakable plastic containers.
The new pot should be big enough to hold the plant. Jumping pot sizes can cause
plants to respond poorly.
Day 5
- If you are having a house built or will need temporay living arrangements until you move into your new home, contact your Robinson Realty Group agent for information on hotels or short lease housing in the area.
Three weeks before the move...
Day 1
- Plan to use up most food items before the move.
Day 2
- Arrange to have major appliances serviced before you move them. If a company-paid move, check with your move coordinator first.
- Check and clear tax assessments.
Day 3
- Movers can't take aerosols, flammables, ammunition or propane tanks. It's best to use them up or give them away before you move.
Day 4
- If you have pets to transfer, contact the State Veterinarian's Office or State Department of Agriculture
requesting the pet laws and regulations of your destination state.
- Request pet's records from the veterinarian.
Day 5
- Notify the Post Office and get change-of-address forms. Notify magazines to which you subscribe. Note: You must fill out a change-of-address form for each person receiving mail at your address.
Two weeks before the move...
Day 1
- Make your travel reservations for the trip.
Day 2
- Take a High Value Inventory make sure to have documents, photos, receipts and appraisals related to any luxury or high value items which need to be transported.
Day 3
- Arrange to discontinue utilities and delivery services.
- Return library books and other things you've borrowed.
- Collect things you've loaned, and items in the dry-cleaners, lay-away, cold storage, safety deposit box, etc.
Day 4
- Take a survey of the condition of you current home for its new owners. Make sure any cosmetic details such as carpet cleaning, painting, etc. are arranged. If neccesary arrange for a cleaning service to perform a "moving out" clean of your home once your furniture has been cleared.
Day 5
- Protect your shipment from damage by disposing of flammables such as gasoline, fireworks, matches, cleaning fluids, bottled gas, aerosols, acids, and caustic drain cleaners, etc.
Day 6
- Arrange connection of utilities in new home.
- Draw up a floor plan of your new home, and indicate placement of furnishings. It makes moving in twice as easy.
Day 7
- Arrange to take down TV antennas or satellite dishes.
- Arrange for cable/satellite TV disconnection.
One week before the move...
Day 1
- Transfer bank accounts, and ask your local credit bureau to transfer your records to your new city.
- Reconfirm travel and lodging reservations.
Day 2
- Unless another means of payment has been prearranged, e.g., credit card, personal check, or company paid, arrange to have cash, a bank check or traveler's check ready to pay the movers.
Day 3
- Your local phone company business office can help you with phone service for your new home, as well as disconnecting service at your present home.
- Set aside maps, games, snacks, flashlight, and other items you'll take in your car.
- Gather medicines and important papers for the car trip.
Day 4
Day 5
- Get name, address and phone number of your moving company's destination agent.
- Drain gasoline and oil from small gasoline-powered equipment.
- Drain water from all garden hoses.

The day before the move...
- Put non-combustible cleaning supplies, toiletries and coffee maker in special boxes to be loaded last, unloaded first.
- Finish packing all suitcases.
- Defrost, clean and dry refrigerator and chest freezer.
- Drain waterbed and prepare for move. See the Atlas brochure "How To Move Your Waterbed."
- Pack your local phone book for future reference of addresses/phone numbers of businesses and friends.
The day of the move...
- Be on hand all day to answer questions and to sign the bill of lading for moving company. Confirm your delivery date, new address and the phone number where you can be reached.
- Make final check of every room and storage area. Make sure windows and doors are locked, keys are transferred and lights are out.
Note: It's a good idea to be at your new home a day ahead of the moving company so you can make sure utilities are connected, and plan placement of major items in your home.
